Matt Smith, writing at Catholic Advocate, takes a look at the two Catholic candidates — Pat Herrity and Keith Fimian — vying for the GOP nomination to the 11th Congressional seat.
Both Herrity and Fimian are pro-life, pro-family Catholics, while the Democratic incumbant Gerry Connolly — also a Catholic — is not.
Smith is critical of how Fimian responded to attacks on his ties to Legatus in the 2008 campaign, calling it “awkward and timid.” He also responds to what he calls a “whisper campaign” questioning Herrity’s pro-life credentials.

But, regardless of whether the nominee is Herrity or Fimian, he will be up against a well-financed, tough opponent who has been voting in lock step with the Obama agenda:
Gerry Connolly’s election has resulted in his votes for Nancy Pelosi to be Speaker of the House, Obama-care, co-sponsoring the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, and supporting same-sex marriage in Washington, D.C. These are just some of the ways he voted against non-negotiable Catholic teachings while agreeing with Nancy Pelosi on 97 percent of his votes. Unlike Nancy Pelosi, who regularly makes up Catholic doctrine, Gerry Connolly studied it for many years. Maybe he didn’t pay close attention during his time in the seminary.
