Maura Healey: The Case for Excommunication

An extremist sits upon the throne of Massachusetts. In her capacity as queen, she has ordered a hit. The victim: a civilization.

On August 10, Maura Healey signed into law H.5595, removing the previous 24-week gestational limit, which included four exceptions, and replacing them with a singularly monstrous standard that an abortion may be performed at any time “based upon the professional judgment of the physician.” Unfortunately, this effectively legalizes the procedure up until the point of birth.

In response to a still-gathering firestorm, Healey’s office issued a statement calling her a “proud Catholic.” The claim is not private eccentricity; it’s a public scandal. Moloch has been born again, something that should greatly alarm the Church. It is only through strong protection of the order of the sacred that peace can be restored.

It is far from justice that this treachery finds itself. To call oneself Catholic in these depths just adds to the sin. The openness of her liberalism has dimmed a civilization. The issue, however, is no longer purely political; it is ecclesial.

Abortion is not an issue primarily for health-care professionals; it is an issue for priests. This is a distinction of divine meaning. Where one enters into being has both a spiritual and material import. To place the latter before the former is to actively undermine the very fabric of reality.

Healey’s double-homicide of both faith and reason is a crime scene. And her mind is not immune. The facts on the ground, as the governor sees them, are precisely the opposite. The devil is wily in transgression and clinical in execution. 

The question becomes one of fate. The wicked nature of what she has done cries for justice. It could be said that the future has accelerated into the present, that the adequacy of seeing Healey anywhere close to the Blessed Sacrament needs revisiting.

The lady’s mere presence in Massachusetts has brought about moral disaster. Her big lie that sacred human life isn’t being ritually exterminated should be greeted with significantly more offense. Hope is not lost to those willing to entertain excommunication.

The eye of God is most holy and wise. It is through His lens that good sense is ascertained. Providence will be kinder should life itself not be hated. The banner swaying in the breeze above Ms. Healey reads “Love is love.” With the wholesale destruction of innocent life now guaranteed, one wonders whatever does she mean?

The Catholic community needs to stand tall against such blasphemous suggestions of horror, let alone their actual implementation. Madness tempts yet more madness. The truth of today is the disease of yesterday.

Healey should receive her just deserts. The ax is now coming down on the innocent, not the guilty. Our moment has passed the meditation of murder and into its completion. 

The lack of a waiting period before the final determination of the abortion reveals Ms. Healey’s hand. There is to be no judgment, no second-guessing, no contemplation of the gravity of the sin before blood is shed. This encouragement of evil goes by the name of freedom of conscience. The ancient serpent not only lives; he reigns.

If Christ heals souls, what is to be made of their massacre? If it is secular doctors who command the heights of the sacred, the final determinations over life and death, when will this charade show its talons? The answer is now. 

The fight against the devil can take a political form. Lawlessness is the rallying cry of our nemesis. It has seized our liberty. The beating heart of excommunication can no longer be ignored. 

Healey’s action amounts to heresy on high. Vicious is its war on holiness. Cruel is its renown. Barbarism has stampeded into the mantle of power. The time is ripe for justice. Unchecked, the calamity is sure to metastasize. 

Archbishop Henning has called the law a “grave offense against the sanctity and dignity of every person.” All four Massachusetts bishops have described the law as “gravely immoral.” These men spoke the truth. They understood and proclaimed the gravity of what had been done. But a lack of decisive action is making silence now a part of the scandal.

No public declaration followed concerning the communion of a baptized Catholic who used the full power of her office to desecrate souls. This is the liberation about which she speaks. The Church has made peace with this terrible crime. The tragedy has been cast. If this isn’t the time to apply excommunication, what is? Lives are at stake.

Healey should be nauseous over what she has done. Given how morally serious the problem is, the Roman Catholic Church is forced not only to speak but to act. Given that Ms. Healey still proclaims that she is in communion with the Church, the necessary response is excommunication.
