Why the American Papist Went to CatholicVote.org

PUBLISHED ON

January 25, 2010

As most InsideCatholic readers may know by now, Thomas Peters of American Papist fame has joined forces with our friends at CatholicVote.org (Brian Burch and Joshua Mercer).

You can bookmark the new American Papist location here.

I asked young Thomas why he made the move. He put down his brew slowly and replied,

Orthodox. Faithful. Free.

A) I’ve moved from just writing to writing and wanting to have an impact, and you need a 501(c)(4)* to do that these days.

B) One of the biggest areas for potential in politics and community is new media, and the CatholicVote gentlemen understand that.

C) Catholics who “vote Catholic” have embraced their faith and have begun applying it to their lives and decisions, and in doing so positively influence the culture. This is a natural nexus between news and action, American Papist and CatholicVoteAction respectively.

For these reasons and more, Thomas Peters thinks his move is a “natural union of goals and an exciting project.”

And I agree completely. We at InsideCatholic and Catholic Advocate know American Papist will continue to thrive and become even more edgy inside a (c)(4) environment.

*A 501(c)(4) is the type of non-profit corporation that permits explicit lobbying on political issues. Donations to a (c)(4), therefore, are not deductible like they are to a 501(c)(3).
